DEXTER - The Dexter Historical Society has installed a new exhibit in the window of the Millside building entitled "Dexter Remembers". This exhibit was inspired by the recent donation of two books. "Maine Remembers Those Who Served, Tributes from the Pine Tree State" and "The Class of 1944 in World War II" from the University of Maine written by Stephen L. Jacobs. On display are photographs, letters and diary entries from Dexter men who served in the Civil War, World War I and II. A homesick Harrison Mower, grandfather of Edith Wilbur, who served in the Civil War writes to his brother that "I was glad to hear so much about your summer's work. When I read such a letter, it seems as though I was there or most there." The American Legion and the VFW are jointly sponsoring a room in the new Abbott Museum that will house permanent displays in honor of veterans of all wars. The Dexter Historical Society newsletter has recently been mailed. It will soon be available on our website at www.dexterhistoricalsociety.com and is also available at local stores and restaurants or by calling 924-5721. |
