Dexter Historical Society won a $43,000 grant from the Quimby Family Foundation to restore and tour around the state, Dexter photographer Bert Call's 'North Woods' photographs, a century after he made them. The Quimby Family Foundation funds are to produce a world class traveling art exhibition of Bert L. Call's work, to be exhibited at historical societies, fine art venues and educational institutions throughout Maine.

Thirty-five years after Thoreau's travels and before mechanized harvesting of the woods, Dexter's local photographer Bert Call, took pictures of the North Woods for the railroad company's use as promotional material.

In all Bert Call climbed Mount Katahdin sixteen times lugging the heavy photographic equipment common at that time. The sweeping vistas and the spectacular mountain and lake scenes reveal Call's passion for the beauty of the region. His work captured a uniquely American 'Rural Idyll', the kind that Thoreau hit upon in his writings.

Please join us on Saturday March 7th at 1pm at the Abbot Museum in Dexter, for a pre-exhibition showing of some incredible prints. Frank Spizuoco, exhibition curator, Jemma Gascoine project coordinator and Todd Watts, printer, will be giving an interim report on the project and will be available for questions.
