Photo Exhibit, "North to Kathdin with Bert and Harry," set to exhibit in July, 2007 in Concord, MA

The Dexter Historical Society of Dexter, Maine is preparing to enlarge its Bert L. Call photo exhibit with an emphasis on his North Woods collection of prints. Thirty years after Henry David Thoreau's three journeys to the Maine woods, Bert Call walked in his footsteps, taking many photographs of places that Thoreau mentioned in his journals.

Call's photos on exhibit will range from 1888 to 1941, showing many spectacular black and white views of the Maine North Woods and will include hand-colored prints done by The Call Studio of Dexter, Maine.

Bert L. Call was the local photographer in Dexter, Maine, starting from 1886 until the late 1940s. Call's stock-in-trade was photos of local citizens and scenes, but his love was the woods, lakes, and rivers of Maine where he traveled annually and took scenic photos. Many of these Call North Woods photos have been preserved by the Dexter Historical Society and have never been viewed by the public.

Because so many of Call's photographic journeys duplicated Thoreau's expeditions to Maine, we have contacted the Director of the Thoreau Society of Concord, Massachusetts. The Society has shown great interest in hosting a display of Bert Call's North Woods photos along with a presentation lecture at their Annual Gathering. This four-day event attracts people from all over the world to Concord, Massachusetts where they participate in a series of lectures, workshops, and local tours concerning Thoreau.

Plans are to exhibit at the Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts in Concord. There is studio space for more than 60 artists in the former Emerson School, a gallery, and a 435-seat performance space. Frank Spizuoco of The Dexter Historical Society has been working with Managing Director Carrie Flood of the Art Center to bring before the public some original Bert Call prints that match Henry David Thoreau's visit to the North Woods 150 years ago. The exhibit will open on July 12, 2007 in Concord, Mass at the Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts on Stow Street.
