Val Albertini, President of the Board of the First Universalist Church of Dexter, and Rick Whitney, Director of the Dexter Historical Society have announced that the congregation and the society are co-sponsoring a project to assure the preservation of the attractive appearance of its church front. The First Universalist Church is an architectural gem and a centerpiece in the town. The project will complete twenty years of restoration on this Dexter landmark, which has included repair of the steeple, the roof, the foundation and the restoration of the last pipe organ in Dexter. A drive to raise the final necessary funds is underway. The goal of the Tower Fund is $10,000. This year marks the 175th anniversary of the original building and the 135th anniversary of its remodeling in 1869 when the tower and vestibule were added under the direction of Thomas Silloway, a nationally known architect of the time. The Tower Project is two-fold: A. Cover the two vestibule wings with clapboards matching the rest of the building and B. Maintain the tower, including the base, the clock faces and the bell chamber, in fresh white paint over the coming years. Funds are being sought from friends of Dexter and of the church.
