New Exhibit at Historical Society

DEXTER - The Dexter Historical Society has a new exhibit at the Abbott Museum.

In September our curator, DRHS history teacher Richard Whitney, and his Maine History class did an exploratory archeology dig on a lot next to the Abbott Museum. The site had a sprawling set of buildings, a boarding house and sheds, which were used for about a hundred years up until around 1911.

The site was gridded into 285 plots, 11 of which were excavated by the students. In the brief time available over 500 items were found. After returning to the classroom, all the items were cleaned, recorded and preserved. The exhibit consists of photos, newspaper articles and a selection of the items found.

The Abbott Museum and Gift Shop at 12 Church Street is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00. For information call 924-5721.
