Dexter has always had its share of musicians. One of the first was Joshua Berry, who cleared the land out on Bement Hill going toward Ripley where the Wintle family now lives. By the Civil War, Dexter had a band of its own, and was justly proud of its musicians. In the above photograph the old Dexter band of 1868 poses in the middle of Main Street in fron of what is now Annie's Restaurant (right) and the site of Reny's (in the background). From left to right are: Frank Campbell, Horace Grant, Charles Flanagan, Bob France, leader Dick Shaw, John Dickson, Tom Knowles, Stillman Mason, John Crossland, John Campbell, and Reuben Taylor.
