James Hope (alias Old Man Hope), a friend and associate of Sam Perris, was also a suspect in the Barron murder. Jimmy didn't constrain his criminal bent just to the East Coast; he traveled to San Francisco, where he and some cronies attempted to rob the banking house Sauther & Company of $600,000. Hope was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to serve seven-and-a-half years at San Quinton. He apparently didn't like the accommodations and subsequently escaped.
