Knight's store, Garland, Maine, in the late 1800s or early 1900s. This general store looks no different from thousands of others spread across the country. General stores offered a wide variety of merchandise, from graham and axe handles to candy, cloth, canned goods, and hardware supplies. In this photograph the proprietor is tallying up an order, while four men are gathered around the bulldog stove to settle the world's problems.
