Dexter's Main Street, 1865. This section of Main Street was always referred to as "the flat" during the 1800s and early 1900s. The Dexter House, the large building with the porch in the center of the picture, was later picked up and moved one lot down in 1876 to make room for the new Bank Block. It stayed there until 1906 when again it was moved to lower Main Street and converted to a tenement building. Note the granite crosswalk in the foreground, used by pedestrians to cross the muddy streets. A little boy is standing next to the town's waterpump just below the Dexter House, and the couple in the buckboard seem to be posing for the photographer. The Universalist church steeple can be seen in the background, but the remainder of the church is obstructed by trees. The Universalist church went though a major renovation in 1869, when the present steeple was constructed.
