In 1814 the family of seven-year-old Maria Jennings Keene left the river town of Penobscot and trekked inland toward Dexter. According to Maria's mother "Penobscot was a drinking place where many boys grew up to follow the sea." The Jennings didn't want to chance this happening to their children, so they journeyed further inland. Maria drove a pig ahead of her during the trek, but the Jennings were forced to sell the pig in the small riverside village of Kenduskeag when it refused to be driven further.
