The Hi Wheeled Bike called the "Ordinary" was the rage in America from 1870 to 1890. First built in England, these bikes had 50 to 60-inch wheels with hard tires; they were more confortable on rough terrain than smaller-wheeled bikes, but could never compete with the pneumatic tires that soon became common after 1890. Shown here are, from left to right: Dave Pomroy (who always dressed in style), John Dyer, Gus Pooler, and Adolph Pooler. Slim Prescott recalled the time as teenagers he and his brother Maynard took their family bike out of the shed to try it against orders from their dad. With Slim in an apple tree and Maynard steadying the bike, Slim jumped on and down the hill he went. It wasn't long before he did a "header" right over the front wheel and broke his nose.
