Witherell's Island was the farm home of Reverend Joseph F. Witherell. Witherell founded our present newspaper, The Eastern Gazette, on March 12, 1853. It was first called The Gem and Gazette. Mr. Witherell complained often about the difficulty in obtaining quality paper. His small farming operation required that he stop publication of the paper a few weeks every summer to do his haying. He had sheep that roamed this island for many years.
